Bruce A. Smathers represented the Ninth District (Jacksonville) in the Florida Senate from 1972 to 1974. He resigned to seek the office of Secretary of State, which he held from 1975 to 1978. As a State Senator, he served on three key committees: Ways and Means, Education, and Governmental Operations. Bruce Armistead Smathers was Florida's eighteenth Secretary of State. Smathers served from January 1975 to June 1978, at which time he resigned to run for Governor of the State of Florida.
